Meet Maxine
Formulation Chemist, Soap Maker and Teacher behind Kindness Chemistry
I’m Maxine Johnson, a lifelong formulation chemist with a soft spot for beautiful, hardworking products. For more than 40 years I’ve been developing soaps, lotions, and home-care formulas that don’t just perform well — they feel good to use and make sense from a science point of view.
A career built on chemistry and care
I started my career as a paid co-op student at Dow Chemical while studying Chemistry at Purdue University. After earning my B.S. in Chemistry, I went on to spend decades in cosmetics, personal care, and home care product development.
Along the way I’ve led R&D and technical innovation teams, created quality and regulatory systems, and partnered closely with contract manufacturers to bring new ideas to market. My work has touched hundreds of products across skincare, SPF, home fragrance, and antibacterial lines — including launches that went on to generate well over $200M in sales.
Brands I’ve worked with include:
Jergens / Kao Brands
Bath & Body Works
Avon
Gold Canyon
Australian Gold
Buff City Soap
I also completed 45 hours of M.S. Pharmacy coursework in Cosmetic Science at the University of Cincinnati, deepening my understanding of how ingredients behave on skin and in real-world formulas.
Today at Kindness Chemistry
These days, I split my time between consulting for companies like Buff City Soap, developing small-batch soaps and personal care products, and teaching others how to make better, science-backed choices for their bodies and homes.
Kindness Chemistry is where all of that comes together — the joy of making, the rigor of formulation science, and a belief that everyday products can be both kind and effective.
If you’re curious about classes, collaboration, or custom work, I’d love to hear from you.
